Julian Carter, co-founder and Head Baker of Hambleton Bakery in Oakham, Rutland took the title of Baker of the Year at the 26th annual Baking Industry Awards, which took place at Park Lane Hilton, London on Wednesday 11 September.
Julian was presented with the award by singer and television personality, Myleene Klass, and Peter Hayes, National Sales Manager of award sponsor ADM Milling.
The Baker of the Year Award is given for a range of criteria including outstanding bakery knowledge and baking expertise, and Julian caught the judges' eye with his range of barm breads, sourdoughs, ryes, spelt breads, plus pastries, tarts and cakes.
Celebrating his award, Julian said: "I will always be a baker and particularly enjoy traditional breadmaking using starter doughs, long ferments plus local and natural ingredients. My years at Hambleton have sharpened my awareness of taste and flavour combinations."
Other winners on the night included Simon Curran of Morrisons' Rathbone Bakery who was named the Rising Star 2013, Finsbury Food Group who picked up the Bakery Supplier of the Year Award and Piero Scacco who was presented with the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Baking Industry for his enthusiasm, guidance and pioneering spirit.
